Howard's Reflecting Pool

Howard's Reflecting Pool | July & August 2010

The longer I live and the more I read, study and uncover what Jesus and all the great spiritual masters
taught, the more I am convinced of the spiritual value of “service.” Being of service to others is consistently
addressed by them all.  This was emphasized again when attending a recent workshop on spirituality. The leader made a statement that seemed to jump out at me. He said, “The idea of service to others as being crucial to spiritual awakening is just a fact!” There is simply no arguing that point.

Everyone goes through phases in their life. One phase is the “it’s all about me” phase. The overwhelming focus
is on one’s self. Some people never move beyond it.  Others at some point come to the realization that the purpose of one’s life is not just to solve one’s own problems, but to give of themselves in some way that helps to free others of their suffering and contributes in some way to others’ happiness.

Finding a way to be of service to others can relieve us of our own problems to some extent, and contributes to
our moving beyond them. It is the law of doing unto others, and reaping what we sow. By helping others, the
spiritual laws of God’s universe reciprocate in like kind.

Albert Einstein seemed to make a distinction between a person being successful and being of value. He said, “A
successful man is he who receives a great deal from his fellow men, usually incomparably more than corresponds
to his service to them. The value of a man, however, should be seen in what he gives, and not in what he is able to
receive.”

There are lots of people who may not have been described as successful in earthly terms, but were a person of
great value by the way they lived.  Entering into the service of others, volunteering, helping, giving of one’s time and talent brings such a sense of value to your life. It is a great way to learn more about yourself and grow spiritually.

Congratulations to all of you who actively enter into service. Those of you who for whatever reason have not, it may be something to consider and act on. We are all the arms, legs, hands and hearts of God. We are truly one.

Peace and Blessings,
